Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Mob?

Mob is a social and play group for women and transfolk interested in BDSM and/or kink sexuality. We offer social and play events, educational demos, and informal opportunities to socialize, have fun and build a sense of community. We claim as positive forces in our lives our many and varied interests in kink, bondage, domination and submission, sadomasochism, leather and perversion. For more information, please look at our Statement of Purpose.

What does Mob stand for?

When the group was first established, it was the acronym MOB, which stood for "Massachusetts Orgasmic Bitches." A number of members were uncomfortable with this terminology so the acronym was dropped. Now, we are simply The Mob - a group of rowdy, independent, fun-loving women and transfolk who enjoy the many facets of the leather lifestyle.

When does Mob meet?

We hold business meetings once a month in the general Boston area.

What does Mob do?

Besides our monthly business meetings, we hold demos/discussions on BDSM topics, host an annual party at the Winter Fetish Fair Flea Market, hold regular socials, lunches, and munches, and engage in numerous social activities ranging from going out to dinner to ice skating to trips to Provincetown.

How can I join?

In order to join Mob, you must identify as a woman or a transperson and be at least 21 years old. Dues are $20/year, more if you can, less if you can’t. You must complete a three- to six-month screening period during which you must attend at least one business meeting, attend a New Member/Safety Orientation, and perform one service to Mob, such as assisting at a play party, facilitating a meeting, taking meeting notes, or assisting or hosting a demo.

Can I join if I identify as transgender?

From our bylaws: Mob is a group for all women, including transsexual/transgender/intersex women who live their daily lives as women, and all female-born transgender/genderqueer persons age 21 and over who have an interest in BDSM. Mob is an organization that very much respects the complexity of gender. Mob will not tolerate anyone taking advantage of our policy in a dishonest or disrespectful manner.

Can I bring a non-trans man to a Mob event?

No. Since Mob identifies as a women and transfolk organization, Mob-sponsored meetings, parties, demos and events are open to women and transfolk only.

Is there an orientation for new members?

Yes. There is a New Member/Safety Orientation before the business meeting every three months. Every new member is expected to attend an orientation before joining. We also try to arrange to have our New Member Coordinator (info at mobnewengland dot org) meet with a prospective member prior to their first business meeting to answer questions and establish a point of first contact.
